Moninsight and FreshBooks both keep real double-entry books, but they start from different places. FreshBooks is invoicing-first software for service businesses, built around time tracking, projects and getting paid, with its fuller accounting tools reserved for its higher plans. Moninsight is bookkeeping-first and built for one-person businesses: AI categorizes every transaction and records it as a journal entry for you, so you get a Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow statement from a real double-entry ledger without learning accounting. Quarterly estimated tax tracking sits alongside the books. Moninsight invoices hourly and per-project rates too, but it has no time tracking or payroll, is single-user, and reports on a cash basis today with accrual in development. FreshBooks is the better choice if you want time tracking and project tools built in, need accrual reporting, or take card payments through the same tool you invoice with.
Both products automate, but in different places. FreshBooks automates the billing side and expense categorization, and since September 2026 you can connect your account to Claude to ask about your profit, cash and invoices — you ask in Claude, not inside FreshBooks. Moninsight builds the AI into the bookkeeping itself: categorization is the default, corrections teach it without a rule, and you ask your books a question in plain English inside the product.
